Finding Our Style

You know how it is when you first rent your own apartment - you inherit various pieces of furniture from your family, your bedroom suite, a kitchen table that is awesome from your Granny, a wingback chair that you picked out the fabric to have it recovered in, a couch from your sister in law, a table from your great aunt, things like that (I feel SO lucky to have passed down furniture btw).
And it's so great to have all of these things when you live with a roommate and both have things of that nature cuz you're young, and just starting out on your own.
And then you meet someone, and he has his own hodgepodge of materials to bring into the mix. And you finally get settled into your new apartment, with all of your things together...and you step back...and you say....what is our style? That's where we are now...we love all of our different family furniture, but we also want to embrace what our own style is .. and we're learning that...slowly.
Case in point: yesterday started our 'pillow hunt' - we have a couple of little pillows, one a wedding present, and one from my Mom that we use on our couch and chair, but we wanted something bigger, something that adds a pop' of color to add to our couch. So we perused the Bed Bath & Beyond, TJ Max, Wal*Mart, and Pier One, but couldn't find anything that we both really liked. But we are learning what materials, textures, and colors we both like. We're thinking back to the home decorating shows that we watch and how they pick one color as the theme of the room and try to tie that color in with the rest of the room. And it's pretty fun! Learning about eachother and what we like and don't like and why. And this is just the beginning, just our little apartment...and our theory is...figure out our style now, in a smaller place, that way when we are ready to buy a house, we'll have a better idea of what exactly we like and how we want to decorate, since our house will be like more than 1200 square feet...um, I hope :) Or at least if not that, then maybe a separate dining room and a larger kitchen....you know, so we can play with color schemes :)
