Milk Pt 2

I'm still amazed by how a woman's body know just how much, at just what temperature, and at just what time, to make milk for her baby.

LC started sleeping through the night a little over a month ago and it took my body about a full 3 weeks to figure out 'oh okay, he's sleeping all night, he's hungrier in the morning, but not famished as in needs to drink 30574 ounces of milk. The production tapered off and I no longer wake up engorged or even uncomfortable. He nurses on both sides every morning now and I have no idea how much milk he takes in, but I'm comfortable before he nurses and moreso afterwards, which he has it down to 10 minutes for his full meal! WOW.

Now as we wind down our nursing - not eliminating any feedings or pumping, but nursing more on a timed basis as opposed to on-demand, since he's onto solid meals, he's not demanding as much as before (when we'd nurse before naps mainly). We now nurse (or if in daycare, give a bottle) around 9:30 or 10, accompanied by breakfast (or if at daycare, a 2nd breakfast snack like yogurt), then again before lunch, usually around 2, and then again around 5, about an hour before his dinner. Then again right before bedtime.

I have found that nursing an hour or so before his meal is working out well - before I was nervous about there being any lag time between nursing and having a solid meal so we'd go from the boob to the table lol.

And typically, as time passed, I realized that was kinda nuts and he wasn't going to go into starvation mode if we waited one hour between nursing and feeding a solid meal. And that's what works now, and it works great at daycare. Breakfast/snack and lunch he does nurse or get a bottle right before his meal. Dinner, we wait a bit, usually nurse or give a bottle at daycare around 5 and he gets his dinner around 6. I found it weird to nurse right before dinner, then have his dinner then nurse at bedtime 30 minutes later - overkill.

I'm still amazed at how my body keeps up, making the milk, giving him what he needs in just the right amount.

I have never felt so blessed and gosh darned lucky.
